Three Men Needed

Writer's picture: Samantha NewtonSamantha Newton

Reference For An Atonement Painting

Following the gruesome death of our Savior, Jesus Christ, a wealthy member of the Jewish council named Joseph of Arimathea courageously approached Pontius Pilate requesting Christ's body. While little detail is known for certain, we understand that he and another, Nicodemus (a Pharisee who had sought Jesus under the cover of night), prepared Christ's body for burial with large amounts of oil and spices as was customary in Jewish burial traditions. They wrapped our Lord's body in linen cloths and buried Him in Joseph's new and nearby tomb, hewn from rock, prior to sealing its entrance with a large stone.

We may try to imagine what that night was like, with two men who risked their reputations and safety out of love for their Savior. For a long time, I have wanted to paint this scene. The time feels like now, and I can't do it alone.

This image, as well as another, are on a tight timeline. I've been invited to participate in 'The Greatest Act of Love' show, featuring only paintings of the Atonement. It will be held at the Compass Gallery in Provo, UT April 4, 2025 - May 31, 2025. I'm humbled to be invited, and eager to get the process moving.

Due to the short time period I have to complete the work, I need your help. While in Utah this month, I photographed a model for one of the works. The remaining reference information I need requires that I have three men help me out by posing and acting the parts of Joseph of Arimathea, Nicodemus, and Christ (deceased). The part of the story I am aiming to capture is after Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus retrieve Christ's body from Pilate's control and are urgently carrying it to Joseph's nearby tomb.
